# Coventry thrash Newcastle for first top-flight home win in 25 years

Coventry City ended a 25-year wait for a Premier League home victory with a 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Monday night. The result lifted them out of the relegation zone and levelled on points with Manchester United.

Lukas Hornicek’s early blunder set the tone. The Newcastle goalkeeper parried the ball away under pressure from Ephron Mason-Clark and then hauled down Sidiki Cherif, and Jack Rudoni sent him the wrong way from the spot.

It was Coventry’s first home top-flight win since a 1-0 victory over Sunderland in April 2001. The penalty was also their first Premier League goal at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Newcastle dominated the ball for long spells. They had 67% possession and 19 shots to Coventry’s nine. But Matias Fernandez-Pardo failed to convert a golden first-half chance from close range, and defender Bobby Thomas made two excellent blocks to keep Coventry ahead at the break.

## **Cherif and Mfuni put the result beyond doubt**

Cherif settled the nerves three minutes after the restart. It was his first Premier League goal, on his first start since signing from Fenerbahce for £21m. He became the first Coventry player to score and win a penalty in a Premier League game since Lee Carsley against Everton in January 2001.

Newcastle briefly revived their chances in the 70th minute, when Sven Botman, tied up by Nico Gonzalez, fired a 20-yard strike into the roof of the net at the near post. But the hosts responded 11 minutes later.

Sub Ellis Simms, set up by Brandon Thomas-Asante, saw his shot deflect in at the second attempt after advantage was played by referee John Brooks following Joelinton’s challenge on the Coventry forward. Five minutes into the second period, Stephen Mfuni curled a lovely shot into the top corner from a Jay Dasilva pass.

Mfuni is 18 and on loan at Manchester City. He has scored his first goal for Coventry, as they became the youngest ever scorer for the club in a competition, and they became the first club to have two teenagers score in their team in a Premier League game.

## **Lampard urges caution**

Frank Lampard spoke of a ‘complete performance’ but took caution. He told BBC Sport the club want to make their ground a ‘fortress’. He added they have to keep their feet on the ground, with Tottenham is next in line. Coventry have now scored 5 times in their last two games, after failing to find the net in their first four league games.

## **Newcastle’s defensive problems deepen**

Newcastle’s problems look more worrying. Matthias Jaissle’s side lost 4-1 at Leeds in their previous league game. They have now conceded the joint-most goals in the league alongside Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Jaissle said afterwards that the team were frustrated, particularly with their play in the final third. They have kept only one clean sheet in their last 14 league games.

Newcastle stay 11th with eight points from six games and had been a win away from fourth. They host Aston Villa on Saturday (17:30 BST).
