# Chris Sutton tips Coventry v Newcastle draw, but can he finally get a Magpies prediction right?

**Premier League | Coventry Building Society Arena | Monday 12 October, 8pm (Sky Sports)**

Chris Sutton wants Newcastle United to draw at Coventry City on Monday night. The BBC pundit’s record on the Magpies this season means Tyneside fans should hope he is wrong.

Sutton has made five Newcastle predictions in 2026/27, and has got them all wrong. With no exact scores or correct results, the former Premier League midfielder finds himself on 0 points from a possible 25. He is now backing a 1-1 draw at the Coventry Building Society Arena, in a match scheduled to kick-off at 8pm.

## **Sutton’s case for a draw**

Sutton believes that Newcastle are an exciting prospect but have a lot of pace but he does not think they have got control of games. He also believes that Coventry will build on their first win of the season courtesy of a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest prior to the international break ‘a draw feels like the obvious result to me’.

There is some sense in his caution considering Newcastle scored twice in the first seven minutes against Hull last time out only to hang on for a 2-1 victory and they also lost 4-1 at Leeds which shows how quickly their shape can unravel under new head coach Matthias Jaissle.

Sutton’s draw predictions have not been great form as he has selected 1-1 for the Leeds game and also the 2-1 victory against Hull which both went the other way. The two draws that Newcastle have played, 2-2 with Liverpool and 2-2 with Bournemouth, are games where he put a different score.

He had Liverpool winning 3-1 and Newcastle taking Bournemouth 2-1. He also predicted a 2-1 win for Tottenham who won 2-0 at their ground.

## **Does the evidence back him?**

Coventry have scored once in the Premier League this campaign and conceded ten times, lying 18th on three points. They have only netted that Forest game’s solitary goal to earn those three points.

Frank Lampard’s men have just returned to the top flight after 25 years and the Arena will be loud but a side scoring on average once every five games will find it tough to get one, let alone a draw-saving goal.

Newcastle are ninth with eight points with the squad getting healthier. Jaissle hoped to welcome three or four players back for this trip, though some may just make the bench.

Midfielder Joelinton is close to a return, described as a “warrior” by the head coach, but goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen is out for a couple of months with a hamstring injury.

Jaissle has warned that Coventry have momentum and that any team can beat any other, but has suggested that they are hard to beat at their best.

## **Our prediction**

Sutton may be right when he says Newcastle can be sloppy. But a defence which has leaked ten goals in five matches and is facing a side which has scored in every league game this season, suggests a home defeat rather than a share of the points. Coventry will fight, but Newcastle should have enough punch up front.

**Prediction: Coventry 0-2 Newcastle**

**Sutton’s prediction: Coventry 1-1 Newcastle**
