# Shearer backs Arsenal and Liverpool but tips four draws as the Premier League returns

The latest Alan Shearer predictions are in as the Premier League returns from the international break, with the Newcastle United legend expecting a competitive weekend across the top flight.

Shearer has tipped six wins and four draws across the programme, with Arsenal and Liverpool among the sides he expects to pick up all three points.

With teams looking to build momentum after the break, the former England captain anticipates a mix of convincing performances and closely fought encounters.

## **Gunners to bounce back**

Arsenal host Leeds United in the lunchtime kick-off as they seek to respond to their heavy loss at Brighton.

Shearer acknowledges that Leeds have been a good team and thought they would finish just above the relegation zone in his pre-season predictions. He believes that the Gunners will recover. Betfair’s odds reflect this view, with Arsenal on 71 per cent.

Sunday’s headline clash sees Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield. The visitors arrive amid off-field issues. Shearer expects City to lose this top-of-the-table clash. He points to their poor record at Anfield and doubts over Erling Haaland’s availability. He also expects a “white hot” atmosphere to favour the hosts.

However, Betfair has the visitors as narrow 39 per cent to 35 per cent favourites.

## **Draws at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge**

Manchester United against Tottenham is a score draw in the eyes of Shearer. Neither of the defences convinces, and the pressure on Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi is intense.

Chelsea are also held by Bournemouth, whom he believes will fade after a strong opening hour. He suspects defensive issues for the Blues have not been resolved, despite Betfair rating them 57 per cent favourites.

Crystal Palace against Nottingham Forest is another stalemate, with Shearer feeling Forest are still adjusting to Glasner’s system.

## **Brighton, Everton and Fulham tipped away**

Shearer is backing Brighton to beat Sunderland, possibly without the injured Brian Brobbey, and predict sixth of seventh place for Fulham boss Fabian Hurzeler. He also likes Everton to win at Hull, by holding on the back foot and exploiting the break, has praised David Moyes for being level-headed in the transfer market.

At Ipswich he is tipping a slender Fulham victory, while Aston Villa are favourites at home to Brentford, though the bookmakers’ odds are slightly shorter for the visitors.

## **Newcastle face Coventry test**

Alan Shearer believes there will be a score draw when Newcastle United visit Coventry City on Monday. The former Magpies striker is confident that Frank Lampard’s men will come into the game confident of adding to their pre-international break win against West Ham.

That said, Shearer thinks this will prove a tough test for Newcastle, who he says will have to be at their very best if they are to pick up all three points.

While Newcastle may start as 46% favourites with Betfair, the former England international thinks that Coventry contain all the ingredients to make life difficult for their visitors.

The Sky Blues will be looking to add to a recent home win, while the Magpies will be eager to return to winning ways after their recent defeat.

Shearer is predicting a 90-minute stalemate between the two sides.
