# Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw helps Klopp secure first Germany win

Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw completed the full match as Germany beat Serbia 2-0 on Thursday to give Jürgen Klopp his first victory as national team coach.

Thiaw started alongside Waldemar Anton in central defence at Munich’s Allianz Arena. The [official DFB match record](https://datencenter.dfb.de/datencenter/uefa-nations-league-division-a-2640/2026-27/gruppe-2/deutschland-serbien-2416019) confirms he stayed on throughout, helping Germany finish with a clean sheet.

Tom Bischof opened the scoring after 39 minutes before Florian Wirtz added the second in the 61st minute.

The result followed a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands and a 1-0 defeat by Greece in Germany’s opening two Nations League fixtures under Klopp.

## Malick Thiaw takes Germany opportunity

Thiaw’s appearance came after [Nico Schlotterbeck’s injury opened up Germany’s defensive options](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/09/30/malick-thiaw-germany-schlotterbeck-injury-opportunity/). The Borussia Dortmund defender was ruled out of the Serbia and Greece matches with an ankle ligament injury.

A full game in a winning defence gives Thiaw a positive outing to build on, although Sunday’s selection will show whether Klopp retains him for the next test.
