# Alexander Isak Subbed with Injury on Sweden Duty

## Alexander Isak Sustains Thigh Injury on Sweden Duty

Alexander Isak scored the winning goal in Sweden’s 2-1 victory over Romania on Friday. He then picked up a thigh injury that ended his night early. The Alexander Isak injury will now keep him out of Sweden’s remaining three Nations League group matches. He is set to return to Liverpool for treatment.

Isak found the net in the 20th minute before the problem developed. It was enough to hand Sweden a crucial win, but the aftermath has taken the shine off the result for club and country alike.

## Graham Potter Confirms Former Newcastle Forward’s Departure

Sweden manager Graham Potter confirmed the injury and explained why Isak cannot be risked in the coming fixtures. “He’s got a small problem with his thigh. It’s not a big one, but because of the amount of games we’ve got in a small space of time. He won’t be able to make those,” Potter said.

Potter also described how the issue only became clear after the final whistle, comments [reported by The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/alexander-isak-injury-news-liverpool-sweden-b3057137.html). “Sometimes you pick up bumps and bruises during a game. You might think it’s just a dead leg or something minor. But actually, as the 24 or 48-hour period after the game passes, it turns out to be not quite what you thought,” he said.

Potter’s phrasing suggests the club and country medical staff are treating this as precautionary rather than serious. No timeline for a Liverpool return has been given.

## Isak Form and Fitness Context After St James’ Park Exit

Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle last year in a £125 million deal, one of the biggest fees ever paid for a Premier League forward. He has scored four goals in five league appearances this season. Continuing the strong form that made him a target for Liverpool in the first place.

Toon supporters will remember his class from spells like the one detailed in [our earlier report](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/23/colossal-display-newcastle-united-player-hailed-performance-liverpool/) on his display against his old club. Since leaving St James’ Park, Isak has had to manage his fitness carefully.

He missed roughly four months last season after fracturing his leg in December. He finished that campaign with 22 appearances and four goals. This latest thigh knock is described as minor. However, given his injury history, Liverpool are unlikely to take any chances with his recovery.

## Sweden Continue Nations League Campaign Without Replacements

Isak is not the only absentee from Potter’s squad. Burnley defender Hjalmar Ekdal has also left the camp with a minor injury of his own.

The Swedish Football Association addressed both departures in a short statement, saying, “No replacements have been called up at this time.” Sweden will therefore continue their Nations League campaign with a reduced squad for the remaining group matches.

Newcastle fans will keep an eye on Isak’s progress at Liverpool over the coming weeks. For now his focus shifts entirely from international duty to club recovery.
