# Joelinton targets Coventry City return after international break

## Joelinton sets return date for Coventry City fixture

Joelinton is aiming to return for Newcastle United against Coventry City on 12 October, once the international break ends. The Brazil midfielder has been out with a recurring injury since the end of last season. He has now confirmed the Joelinton Coventry return date himself. [Dan Burn](https://readnewcastle.com/squad/dan-burn/), the club’s defender, also expects to be fit for that game.

Joelinton set out his timeline in a [Chronicle Live interview](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/joelinton-breaks-silence-newcastle-united-34658027):

> The plan is to be back now after the international break. I am feeling really good. I have worked hard and worked smart, I can’t wait to be back and be with the team, the boys and the new players and in front of the fans again.

## Midfielder outlines long recovery journey and return timeline

Joelinton has spoken openly about the hard months behind him. He first felt the injury at the end of last season. He returned too soon and picked up a fresh setback. That delayed his comeback further.

> I would not say it has been good because I have not been able to play or do what I love. I want to help the club and the boys on the pitch at this moment. But I am recovering, and I am feeling good now. It has been a long journey since the end of last season, when I had my first injury, then came back and felt it again.

He also discussed the club’s direction in [our earlier report](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/09/23/joelinton-bruno-guimaraes-eddie-howe-departure/). His fitness is improving now, and he simply wants to get back on the pitch.

> Now I am feeling better and I can’t wait to be back on the pitch, I can’t wait to wear the shirt again and play for the fanbase again, I have really missed it.

## Leadership group role under Matthias Jaissle

Matthias Jaissle took over as Newcastle’s head coach from Eddie Howe earlier this season. He has since built a new leadership group within the squad. Joelinton is part of that group. It gives him a senior voice in the dressing room while he recovers.

Dan Burn will also be fit for the Coventry game. Newcastle have missed both players for spells this season. Their return would boost Jaissle’s options in midfield and defence. ## Upcoming schedule and international break timeline

Newcastle’s players report back for training once the international break ends. That gives Joelinton and Dan Burn a short window to prepare before the Coventry City game on 12 October. Both players hope to be available once Jaissle picks his squad.

The club head into the break off the back of [the recent win over Hull City](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/09/19/newcastle-united-2-1-hull-city-match-report/). Supporters hope the Joelinton Coventry return brings fresh energy afterwards. Jaissle’s side will look to build on that form once matches resume.
