# Fabrizio Romano confirms Newcastle United in talks to sign World Cup hero

The Matthias Jaissle era is now well and truly upon us at [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/11/newcastle-united-make-offer-e120-million-rated-midfielder/). That being said, if it has to have any chance of being a success, the club will need to make some quality additions to their squad.

The current Newcastle United squad is simply not good enough. In fact, if they fail to improve, there is a genuine chance that they could find themselves in a relegation battle, which is the last thing anybody could want.

What has happened has happened. Whoever has left has left. Now, it is time to look towards the future. Hopefully, that includes bringing in a number of players Jaissle wants.

The full-back position is one that could do with some immediate strengthening. And fortunately, it looks like talks are already underway to sign a Bosnia & Herzegovina international.

## Fabrizio Romano confirms Newcastle United talks to sign defender

According to [Fabrizio Romano](https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/2087190685141053563), Newcastle United are in club-to-club talks with Benfica for 23-year-old fullback Amar Dedic. Negotiations started today.

Dedic represented Bosnia & Herzegovina at the recent World Cup. The nation enjoyed their best ever performance at the tournament, as they reached the round of 32 before being eliminated by the United States.

Dedic was heavily involved himself as he played three full games for his national team at the World Cup. Incidentally, the one game he sat out, against Qatar, is the only one they ended up winning.

Anyways, he has clearly done well enough with his individual performances for Bosnia & Herzegovina and Benfica to catch the eye of Newcastle United. Now, it remains to be seen whether a move will happen or not.

## Newcastle need to strengthen at right-back

Considering that talks are already taking place and negotiations are underway, it is quite clear that the situation is already advanced. And one would hope that the signing gets over the line as soon as possible.

Newcastle United are paper-thin at right-back at the moment. Tino Livramento is dealing with an injury he picked up right before the World Cup.

While he is recovering, it remains to be seen whether he will be fit in time for the Premier League opener. Even if he is, playing and starting a competitive game are two completely different things.

So, having another quality right-back available would make sense for Newcastle United. Dedic could very well be that guy, if Newcastle United can agree a deal and complete it before then.
