# Newcastle United closer to first Matthias Jaissle signing after hint

Matthias Jaissle began his reign as Newcastle United manager with a 2-1 win over Valencia. There were some positive signs for sure, even though the victory might have come against a 10-man opposition after Jose Gaya was sent off for a horror challenge on Anthony Elanga.

Overall, there needs to be a recognition that Newcastle United need to strengthen this squad. They have simply lost far too much quality this summer.

Their replacements have been youngsters. And while there is no question about talent levels, the Magpies will also need the right balance of experience and leadership to complement it.

One player Newcastle United have been linked with over the past couple of days is [Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/09/newcastle-united-tipped-sign-25-year-old-elite-midfielder-hojbjerg/). And there seems to be a positive update regarding a potential move for the former Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich midfielder.

## Hojbjerg’s agent opens door to potential Marseille exit

Still just 31 years of age, Hojbjerg should have plenty of football left in the tank. In fact, he is still playing at a pretty high level. He captains both Marseille and the Denmark national team.

According to [Newcastle World](https://www.newcastleworld.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/agent-speaks-out-newcastle-united-inch-towards-ps15m-midfielder-signing-8847280), Hojbjerg’s agent, Luca Puccinelli, reiterated the midfielder’s pride at playing for Marseille but also kept the door open regarding a possible summer exit. He said:

> “Pierre is a proud Olympique de Marseille player. He is working hard and staying focused every day. About the future we will see.”

Those sound like the words of someone who is willing to explore all opportunities. He most certainly has not ruled out an exit. And other outlets have claimed recently that Hojbjerg is open to the idea of returning to the Premier League.

That definitely strengthens Newcastle United’s chances of signing Hojbjerg. As do the reports that Marseille might need to raise money this summer and could be open to the prospect of parting with their captain for the right offer.

What would that offer be? Well, it is thought that a bid in the region of €15 million could be enough to convince Marseille to let Hojbjerg leave.

## Will Newcastle United make Hojbjerg move?

Even at 31 years of age, Hojbjerg would most probably be a regular starter for Newcastle United. He would add the experience and leadership this side badly needs, alongside proven quality at the Premier League.

Hojbjerg spent time at both Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur. So, there should not be an adjustment period. He is the type of player who should be able to walk straight into the starting XI.

Then again, let’s not overlook the fact that Hojbjerg is just one of many midfielders being linked with Newcastle United right now. Will a move to St James’ Park transpire? Time will tell.
