# Newcastle United advancing in talks to sign elite midfielder

One of the biggest worries for [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/04/newcastle-united-ready-open-talks-sign-matthias-jaissle-favourite/) fans right now is the future of Bruno Guimaraes. It looks like the club captain is eager to leave and has already agreed terms with Arsenal.

An exit has not happened so far though. And while there have been conflicting reports in the media for weeks, for now, Guimaraes is still a Newcastle United player.

The last update we got, Newcastle United had turned down Arsenal’s bid to sign Guimaraes. That has raised some hopes that he might end up staying after all.

But if you ask me, that is unlikely to happen. When a transfer saga reaches this point, a move ends up happening eventually, as it did with Alexander Isak last year. Fortunately, it looks like Newcastle United have their eyes on potential replacements already.

## Newcastle United eyeing elite replacement for Bruno Guimaraes

According to French outlet [L’Equipe](https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Actualites/Mercato-felix-nmecha-pour-remplacer-bruno-guimaraes-a-newcastle/1708867), Newcastle United are already making progress in signing Guimaraes’ replacement and are targeting Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund.

Newcastle United’s management is now making progress in bringing in a replacement for Guimaraes. For several weeks, a clear target has been identified, which is Nmecha.

The financial details of the negotiations between the two clubs have not been disclosed. That being said, Newcastle United are already aware of all of Borussia Dortmund’s demands when it comes to Nmecha’s potential transfer.

Nmecha would be a big-name acquisition for Newcastle United, that is for sure. And he is the kind of signing that would excite the fans, which can be said for some of the potential replacements that have been suggested in the media in recent weeks.

Nmecha is proven at club level, at Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg before that. He has also represented Germany a dozen times and was a standout for them at the World Cup.

## Why Felix Nmecha would be a good signing for Newcastle

Something that many might forget is that Nmecha would not be a newcomer to England, if a move to Newcastle United did happen this summer.

Nmecha spent more than a decade playing for Manchester City at youth level and even made a few senior appearances for the club. Eventually, it is in Germany that he established himself and chose to represent the German national team as well.

Anyways, let’s just say that signing Nmecha would be a step in the right direction for Newcastle United, if Guimaraes does indeed end up leaving this summer. He is one of the few players who might be capable of filling that void.

Nmecha is 25 years of age and is heading towards his prime. That is the profile that Newcastle United need to replace someone of Guimaraes’ calibre, not a project signing.
