# Fabrizio Romano confirms £30m transfer after Newcastle United talks

This has been a summer to forget for [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/07/29/newcastle-united-advancing-deal-sign-45m-centre-back/). But the fans might have a tough time doing so. Most of what they have tried has not really come off. Unfortunately, their luck does not seem to be changing.

Newcastle United have already missed out on two signings who were their top targets. Victor Munoz picked a move to Liverpool when it had seemed like one to St James’ Park was only a matter of time. And Johan Manzambi picked Aston Villa even though the Magpies had agreed on a fee with SC Freiburg.

Now, it looks like Newcastle United have missed out on not one, but two of their targets to strengthen between the posts. The James Trafford news has been out for a while. Now, a second name has been added to that.

## Newcastle United miss out on target despite holding talks

It was not too long ago that reports emerged that Newcastle United had held talks with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign Carl Rushworth. It is not hard to understand their interest in the goalkeeper.

He had spent the previous season out on loan at Coventry City as Frank Lampard’s side topped the Championship. Rushworth was one of the standout performers and the underlying numbers were fantastic.

Someone like Rushworth could come in and immediately take on the first-team gloves at Newcastle United if he could make the adjustment from the Championship to the Premier League. But he will be taking on that challenge elsewhere.

According to [Fabrizio Romano](https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/2082266767955546140), Coventry City have agreed all details of the Rushworth transfer deal with the medical booked as well.

The Championship-winning goalkeeper from last season joins Lampard’s side for a £30 million transfer package, with add-ons and a sell-on clause included. It is a long-term deal. The initial fee will be £22.5 million.

## What are Newcastle United’s plans for next season?

At this point, one has to wonder what Newcastle United’s plans are for that goalkeeping spot next season. Trafford and Rushworth both seem to be headed elsewhere.

The only goalkeeper they have been linked with in recent days is Lukas Hornicek of SC Braga. He has a release clause thought to be in the region of £25-30 million in his contract.

That is very similar to what Rushworth is moving to Coventry City for, and not a million miles away from what Leeds United might end up spending to sign Trafford.

So, is it that Newcastle United think that Hornicek is a better goalkeeper than those two? Or is it that they were not able to convince them to join the Magpies?

Also, let us not rule out the possibility of Nick Pope staying on for another season. After the Magpies have missed out on their targets, that could very well happen.
