Tino Livramento Injury Forces Him Out of England World Cup Squad

Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento has withdrawn from England’s FIFA World Cup 2026 squad after suffering a calf injury in training, forcing Thomas Tuchel into a late defensive change.

The 23-year-old had travelled with England for the tournament, but a scan and medical assessment confirmed he could play no further part after picking up the issue during a session with the Three Lions. Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has been called into the squad as his replacement.

Livramento’s withdrawal is a sharp personal blow after his return from the thigh problem that disrupted the end of his Newcastle season. It also leaves Eddie Howe waiting on another fitness update before pre-season planning begins in earnest.

Newcastle wait on Livramento return timeline

According to a fresh update from Sky Sports, Livramento is expected to continue his rehabilitation with Newcastle after England decided the injury would keep him out for too long to remain with the group.

Tuchel said the defender was “very disappointed and sad” after learning the setback would end his tournament before England’s campaign had properly started.

For Newcastle, the timing matters because Livramento’s versatility at right-back and left-back is central to Howe’s defensive planning. The immediate priority is avoiding any unnecessary risk before the squad returns for club duty, especially with a full Premier League season and European ambitions ahead.

The injury is not being framed as long-term at this stage, but Newcastle supporters will want clarity quickly. Livramento’s summer has changed from a World Cup opportunity into a recovery race.
