- Newcastle United winger offered escape by European giants
- Anthony Gordon courted by Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona
- Contract details emerge ahead of potential summer exit
Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon seems to be the talk of the transfer window, with several major European clubs keeping a keen eye on the Magpies winger — and one team has already taken the next step.
Journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that Gordon has been offered a five-year deal by Bayern Munich, with the financial details shown to him and his representatives.
The only issue for the Bavarian side now is the price tag of the 25-year-old. Last summer showed the Black and Whites’ intent to keep their best players, before allowing Alexander Isak to leave in a £125 million deal.
With other clubs circling the Englishman ahead of what looks set to be a busy summer, an inflated price could be placed on Gordon.
Anthony Gordon is close to a European move
The interest from the recently crowned Bundesliga champions has been longstanding, as they have made it clear they want to bring Gordon to the Allianz Arena.
However, it’s not just them applying pressure on Eddie Howe’s side. A video from journalist Carlos Monfort over the weekend showed the 25-year-old’s representatives leaving a taxi after talks with Barcelona director Deco.
One of the key attributes the Newcastle winger possesses — which makes him a prime target for these elite teams — is his desire to win the ball high up the pitch and his relentless work rate.
Last week’s Champions League semi-final between the Bundesliga side and current champions of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain, showcased that perfectly. All of their forwards are pressing machines, which led to the nine-goal thriller in France.
There is a slight complication for Vincent Kompany’s side, alongside the fee — and that is Luis Díaz. The Colombian winger joined from Liverpool last summer and has settled extremely well, being recognised as one of the best wingers in the world.
With Harry Kane occupying the No. 9 position, it raises questions about where both left wingers would fit into the team — or whether one would drop to the bench. However, it does look likely that someone will sign Gordon this summer.
Gordon set for Newcastle United exit
Pen has not yet been put to paper, though many in the Toon Army accept that the Scouser could be leaving the club this summer. He has recently fallen out of favour with some supporters, having missed games through injury — which some believe is a tactic to engineer a move.
However, he has been a consistent provider of goals and assists, as well as delivering some of the best moments Newcastle fans could hope for. Even in this difficult campaign, he has scored a number of goals in the Champions League, as they reached the last 16 for the first time ever.
The electric winger will be remembered for his dazzling contributions to help the club win their first domestic trophy since the 1950s, but it seems his time in Tyneside is close to coming to an end.
