Newcastle United will trial a new Park and Ride scheme for supporters on Saturday afternoon when Brighton visit St James’ Park in the penultimate home game of the campaign. The route will run from Newcastle Great Park.
The scheme has been developed following a Sustainable Travel Workshop, where supporters were involved in calling for greater accessibility to the stadium.
Several options were explored to encourage greener travel to St James’ Park, and the best part for matchday supporters is that it is free. Fans who bring their matchday ticket can board the bus at no cost.
Newcastle Great Park Park & Ride
The game kicks off tomorrow at 3 pm, with supporters able to board buses between 1 pm and 2.45 pm at the Taylor Wimpey car park off Great Parkway (NE13 9AA), with services running every 15 minutes.
The Toon Army must be quick to return after full-time, however, with just three buses scheduled to take fans back to their departure point from outside St Andrew’s Church on Newgate Street.
The club have said they are working on options to reduce congestion on matchdays, and this initiative marks a step in the right direction.
Newcastle United attention on future of club this week
While this is beneficial for some supporters, others were hoping for a more substantial update from the club following yesterday’s meeting, where discussions focused on the future direction of the organisation.
One of the key talking points was expected to cover the possibility of a new training ground, alongside clarity on whether St James’ Park will remain a cornerstone of the North East project or be replaced by a new stadium.
In response to the official post from the club, some fans expressed their frustration on X. @ToonGaff said: “Small clubs on the south coast announcing a stadium for their women’s team and we’re announcing … a park and ride scheme.” Meanwhile, @MagpieMediaX commented: “Bore off.”
There appears to be growing discontent between the club’s hierarchy and supporters over the level of updates being shared by journalists and the club itself.
The board meeting earlier this week suggested something significant was coming for the club. However, 24 hours on, there has been little to materially excite fans, which helps explain the frustration being expressed.
In other news, Newcastle United can beat Brighton if Anthony Gordon repeats infamous Everton heroics.
