- Newcastle United return to action against Brighton
- Anthony Gordon expected back from injury
- Eddie Howe must call upon their star man
Newcastle United return to action this weekend against Brighton after suffering another defeat at the hands of Arsenal. William Osula started up front against the Gunners and did score against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, but the team will surely see a shake-up.
Before the game against Bournemouth, where the Magpies lost 2-1, Anthony Gordon had led the line on several occasions prior to his injury. While the Englishman has performed well, it may finally be time for Nick Woltemade to return to the No. 9 role.
The German has been relied upon in a midfield trio since the turn of the year, yet everyone in the Toon Army knows he’s at his best in front of goal.
Newcastle United need Nick Woltemade up top
Osula has been solid recently and does exactly what is expected in a Howe side: making darting runs in behind and causing chaos for defenders throughout the game.
He has scored against the Cherries and Crystal Palace in recent weeks, and also grabbed a last-gasp winner over Manchester United.
The same can be said for Gordon, who likes to stretch defensive lines and create space for teammates to play incisive passes in dangerous areas. With the England international set to return from injury, Howe will surely be tempted to deploy him there – but it would be a mistake.
It’s clear that the Black and Whites need a different approach, as the current system is not delivering the results they would have anticipated. The Tyneside outfit are on a five-game losing streak, and based on recent performances, that could continue against a strong Brighton side.
Yoane Wissa could be trusted to spark a revival, but he looks a shadow of his former self, something highlighted by a big chance missed against Mikel Arteta’s side.
And who was the architect of that move? None other than the German forward—another reminder of why he should be starting in a more advanced position.
His presence offers something few others in the Premier League can. He brings composure on the ball and creativity in attack, and while he is currently on a goal drought, he has already shown he can find the net.
If Howe is to turn things around, he must return to what has worked before—and that means Woltemade leading the line.
Anthony Gordon can refind form on the wing
Gordon has frustrated many supporters recently, with some in the Toon Army suggesting his performances hint at a desire to move on. However, a return to the wing could see him rediscover his best form.
Woltemade has shown moments of creativity, but moving him further forward would also allow others to return to their natural roles—such as Gordon on the flank.
Across the board, it makes sense for Woltemade to lead the attack once again. So please, gaffer—just do it.
In other news, FIFA rule change could benefit Newcastle United but hurt Arsenal and Liverpool.
