- Ex Newcastle United striker scores huge goal in Premier League title race
- Callum Wilson scores for West Ham in injury time
- Tottenham Hotspur remain in bottom three
Ex Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson may have written his name into West Ham folklore with a huge goal in injury time against Everton at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Magpies have struggled for potency in front of goal this season with Eddie Howe chopping and changing between William Osula, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa. Howe has never looked settled in picking a striker to lead the line.
The club allowed Wilson to leave as a free agent last summer. The former AFC Bournemouth man scored 49 goals in 130 appearances for the Magpies.
Callum Wilson scores huge West Ham goal against Everton
Wilson joined West Ham in August and has had a mixed season in London. The striker has never cemented a place in the starting XI, but has chipped in with six Premier League goals.
None will be bigger than his 92nd-minute strike against Everton on Saturday. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were leading 1-0 in the 88th minute before Toffees midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall found a leveller.
It looked to be a sucker punch for the Hammers, with Spurs picking up three points in a 3-0 win over Wolves. However, Wilson fired home to put his side ahead once again in a vital nine-minute cameo from the bench.
Speaking on Final Score, former Premier League star Ashley Williams said: “West Ham have just conceded and then to react like that, fair play to them. Brilliant.”
Wilson’s goal ensures that, despite Tottenham winning at Molineux, West Ham stay out of the relegation zone. The Hammers sit 17th on 36 points with Spurs in 18th on 34 points.
Eddie Howe on ex Newcastle United striker
Speaking about the decision to let Wilson go earlier this season, Howe said: “Sometimes for everybody it is best to part ways. That is the sad thing in life and football.
“You can’t stay together forever but I wish him well and I am watching him and hope for the best.
“My love for Callum is as high as it could ever be. As a player and a person, what he did for me, the games he played, the goals he scored at Bournemouth and Newcastle and the attitude he played with on and off the pitch.
“The injuries he suffered and his character to fight through them, I could not respect him anymore.”
