- Roberto Mancini linked with Newcastle United job
- What ex Manchester City manager has said about Premier League return
- Proven title-winning pedigree.
Newcastle United may already know where Roberto Mancini stands on a Premier League return, with the Italian previously admitting he would like to come back to the top flight.
The former Manchester City boss has once again been linked with a move to St James’ Park amid the noise surrounding Eddie Howe’s future. While Howe remains in charge, Newcastle’s difficult campaign has sparked conversations about a possible change next season and the former Premier League winner would be up to the task
Roberto Mancini wants Premier League return
Roberto Mancini has made it clear that he admires English football when asked about managing in the Premier League again. He said: “Anytime. Every league is special. I really enjoyed the Premier League and the years I spent in the UK. Every coach dreams of coaching in the Premier League.”
That statement is likely to raise eyebrows on Tyneside, where Newcastle remains one of the most attractive jobs in English football. Mancini has been out of the Premier League since leaving Man City in 2013, but his admiration for the English top flight hasn’t faded.
Why Newcastle link appeal
The Newcastle United job represents a unique opportunity for a manager of Mancini’s profile. The club is ambitious, has elite backing, has a huge and loyal fanbase and is at a stage where they can challenge for silverware, similar to when he took over Man City job from Mark Hughes in 2011.
Mancini has experience of succeeding in ambitious projects under significant expectations. At City, he helped cement the foundations of the club’s modern dominance, ending the club’s 44-year league drought in his first season.
Reflecting on his time at the Etihad, Mancini said: “It was one of the most beautiful and intense moments of my athletic career. The incredible intensity that this league has every weekend culminated in this title. We implemented a long-term plan and started a series of successes that has continued under Guardiola in a great way and ultimately achieved the goal of the 2023 Champions League title.”
Proven winning record
The Italian is regarded highly as a manager for both club and country. He delivered Man City’s first league title in 44 years, won the FA Cup and later guided Italy to their second Euros glory – their first international trophy since winning the World Cup in 2006.
For the Magpies, appointing a manager with that pedigree would signal serious intent. However, Eddie Howe deserves all the credit for transforming the club since arriving and remains the current man in charge.
If Newcastle do ever decide to make the change this summer, Mancini seriously needs to be looked at, as he would welcome a Premier League return.
