Newcastle want to sign €65m Wissa replacement

Newcastle United have struggled up top this season, lacking a focal figure. Yoane Wissa has particularly struggled, and Italian news outlet L’Interista believe the Magpies are weighing up a potential move for Inter Milan forward Marcus Thuram.

The French international has endured a poor season by his standards, and with him turning 29 in August, the Serie A giants are looking to sell him this summer. He has just over two years left on his contract.

Eddie Howe’s side showed they will move to an older player if they show quality, which they did with Wissa last summer. He has not been able to replicate his Brentford form, with signs suggesting he could already be on his way out of Tyneside this summer.

Thuram on the market

The 29-year-old began his career in France at Sochaux and Guingamp, but he made a real name for himself at Bundesliga outfit, Borussia Monchengladbach.

In Germany, he was a constant threat in front of goal, scoring 13 Bundesliga goals in 30 appearances in his final season. Following this, he earned a move to one of Italy’s biggest clubs, Inter, where he has continued to shine alongside strike partner Lautaro Martinez.

During his time in Blue, he has won one league title and could be on to deliver a second this season.

However, the French international has not been able to continue his great goalscoring form, with just seven goals in 23 Serie A appearances.

Thuram has also picked up small injuries over the last two years, and if they continue to grow, it could spell danger for him.

The Italian side won’t let him go easily, as they are looking to achieve a €65 million fee, but Newcastle are keeping a keen eye on him.

The Italian giants are currently looking to rebuild their ageing side, and with them having two strikers in Martinez and Ange-Yoan Bonny, it would be an ideal time to move Thuram on.

Newcastle Failed Replacements

Nick Woltemade and Wissa have not been able to replace Alexander Isak effectively, whether that’s their fault or not. The Swede’s final season on Tyneside saw him register 29 goal contributions in 34 league outings.

The two new forwards combined have registered just 11 so far this season, and 10 of those have been from the German. Woltemade’s life in Black and White started better than many expected, but this has quickly changed, mainly with him featuring in a midfield trio.

This has not only affected his output but also his confidence, as he looks like a shell of what he was like when he joined Newcastle.

It’s a different story with Wissa, as injuries and poor performances have seen him linked away from the St James’ Park outfit.

Howe will look to strengthen his side this summer, with no recognised goalscorer, and while he’ll be closing in on his 30s, Thuram’s experience of winning trophies could be valuable to the Magpies.
