- Kevin Phillips points out Sunderland wins
- Gordon harsh words for Black Cats
- Newcastle derby misery continues
Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon claimed Sunderland are “not a very good team” following their 2-1 defeat at home to the Black Cats. Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips pointed out that his side had beaten the Magpies twice this season.
Phillips told talkSPORT, “Not only (did they) lose the derby, but lost two derbies this season. Let’s get that right.”
When the two met at the Stadium of Light back in December, an own goal from Nick Woltemade was the difference between the two sides.
The result also moved the Black Cats back ahead of the St James’ Park outfit in the Premier League, with Eddie Howe’s side slumped to 12th, with them now having an outside chance for European football next season.
Phillips responds to Gordon
Following the defeat on the weekend, no players in Howe’s squad spoke to the media; instead, it was just Gordon who spoke to NUFC TV.
The English forward had a lot of damning things to say about their fierce rivals and how Regis le Bris side are simple not very good.
He said, “We let them into the game and gave them the win. The frustrating thing is, in my opinion, they’re not a very good team compared to us.”
The 25-year-old continued.
“I thought they were very poor today.”
Phillips was quick to slam Gordon for his comments about the Black Cats.
He said, “Anthony Gordon is a fantastic player, but he didn’t turn up in the first game, and he didn’t pretty much turn up in the second game apart from the goal.”
The former Premier League golden boot winner continued.
“I get annoyed when I listen to a lot of Newcastle fans say (the) first half they dominated. They didn’t. For the first 10 minutes, they were the better team but, after that, Sunderland matched them, was far superior in the second half and deserved to win the game. It’s as simple as that.”
Newcastle derby struggles deepen
Another defeat for Howe’s troops has left a sour taste amongst many in the Toon Army, with their failure to turn up in the derby.
This will be the 11th league meeting the Magpies have failed to come away with the three points, the longest in the history of the fixture for either side.
Newcastle’s poor performances in the Tyne-Wear derby are becoming inexcusable, and this recent result is hurting Howe.
Many are questioning his future on Tyneside, alongside several players who the supporters don’t believe are doing enough in Black and White.
The Tyneside outfit will have to wait a handful of months now before they take on the Black Cats again, but it’s expected to be a much-changed Newcastle side. Can they rise to the challenge and finally beat their rivals in the league?
