## Botman sidelined again

Botman joined The Magpies from Lille in 2022 and has made a big impact on Tyneside, helping Eddie Howe’s side to two Carabao Cup finals and two Champions League campaigns.

Frustratingly, however, the Dutchman has spent a lot of time on the sidelines since moving to St James’ Park The centre back has missed no fewer than 58 games in three and a half years, including eight months in 2024, thanks to a cruciate ligament injury.

Botman recently signed a new [long-term contract](https://www.newcastleunited.com/en/news/sven-botman-signs-new-long-term-contract), keeping him at the club until 2030.

“I feel like I have a lot to give still, and I feel that this club has huge potential.” He said shortly after penning the new deal.

“With the injuries, it’s been a difficult time. Even when I came back from my ACL, I played a couple of games, then had another injury.”

## Injury time

Botman’s latest injury means he joins a long list of Newcastle abentees ruled out with various ailments. The Magpies are without several key names, including Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Guimaraes has been [ruled out due to a hamstring injury](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cj320gmz40no) he picked up at Tottenham Hotspur last month. The Brazilian revealed over the weekend that he was also [battling a mumps diagnosis](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/bruno-guimaraes-newcastle-mumps-nhs-33639619).

Lewis Miley, Emil Krath, and Fabian Schar are also missing in what has been a frustrating season for Eddie Howe’s side in terms of injuries. Their £55 million summer signing, Yoane Wissa, had to wait more than three months to make his debut.

The former Brentford man arrived at St James’ Park in September, but suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury whilst on international duty, which ruled him out until December.
