Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has undergone facial surgery following an injury he picked up in yesterday’s loss to Sunderland. He was replaced in the 55th minute with a suspected concussion following a clash with Brian Brobbey.
A club statement read:
“Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has undergone successful surgery on a facial fracture. Following concussion protocol, the Dutchman was substituted after suffering the injury during the second half of Sunday’s game against Sunderland at St. James’ Park.”
“Sven is not expected to be sidelined for an extended period and hopes to be available again during the closing weeks.
Botman sidelined again
Botman joined The Magpies from Lille in 2022 and has made a big impact on Tyneside, helping Eddie Howe’s side to two Carabao Cup finals and two Champions League campaigns.
Frustratingly, however, the Dutchman has spent a lot of time on the sidelines since moving to St James’ Park The centre back has missed no fewer than 58 games in three and a half years, including eight months in 2024, thanks to a cruciate ligament injury.
Botman recently signed a new long-term contract, keeping him at the club until 2030.
“I feel like I have a lot to give still, and I feel that this club has huge potential.” He said shortly after penning the new deal.
“With the injuries, it’s been a difficult time. Even when I came back from my ACL, I played a couple of games, then had another injury.”
Injury time
Botman’s latest injury means he joins a long list of Newcastle abentees ruled out with various ailments. The Magpies are without several key names, including Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
Guimaraes has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury he picked up at Tottenham Hotspur last month. The Brazilian revealed over the weekend that he was also battling a mumps diagnosis.
Lewis Miley, Emil Krath, and Fabian Schar are also missing in what has been a frustrating season for Eddie Howe’s side in terms of injuries. Their £55 million summer signing, Yoane Wissa, had to wait more than three months to make his debut.
The former Brentford man arrived at St James’ Park in September, but suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury whilst on international duty, which ruled him out until December.
