  • Dan Burn eyes World Cup dream
  • The defender’s late breakthrough
  • The 33-year-old’s final chance

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has revealed he is ’desperate’ to represent England at the 2026 World Cup, as he looks to complete a monumental late career rise on the international stage.

The 33-year-old centre-back has enjoyed a resurgence in recent seasons. He’s become a key figure under Eddie Howe and has earned recognition at international level later than most of his compatriots.

Burn’s late England rise

Dan Burn’s journey to representing England has been anything but conventional. The ‘Boy from Blyth’ has spent much of his career working his way through the lower leagues before establishing himself in the Premier League. Since then, the defender has only managed to earn his England opportunity in his 30s.

This late breakthrough has made his current opportunity even more significant. He made his first appearance for the Three Lions on March 21st last year against Albania. He’s gone on to earn four more caps since his international debut.

Unlike many other international regulars, Burn doesn’t have many more tournaments ahead of him. Instead, he finds himself fighting for a place on the June flight, which could realistically be his first and only major competition with England.

World Cup Final Opportunity

Making his ambitions clear, the Newcastle defender has made it known how much this opportunity means for him. He is determined to be part of the squad heading to the tournament.

With the 2026 World Cup just over 2 months away and England already qualified under Thomas Tuchel, competition for places is intensifying.

The veteran Magpies star told Sky Sports:

“I want to be there. If I don’t get this chance, it’s not going to happen.”

Burn’s age adds urgency to his push. By the time the next major tournament arrives, he will have turned 35 years old, making this upcoming World Cup potentially his last chance to represent his country on the grand stage.

The good news is that he made Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming pre-World Cup friendlies. He could be in action against Uruguay (March 27th) and Japan (March 31st).

Strong season boosts hopes

Dan Burn has been fairly consistent with his performances for Newcastle since he joined them. His leadership, aerial dominance and versatility across the backline have made him a reliable option for both club and country.

England manager Tuchel has already suggested he has a genuine chance of making the squad, provided he maintains his current level of performance. The Newcastle United defender knows that the dream is alive as long as he keeps delivering.

If selected, it would cap off one of the most unique journeys in English football, with the boyhood Newcastle fan earning a place on the world stage against the odds.
