Newcastle United may find it easier to sign Leandro Trossard than James Maddison.
That is according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who believes sporting director Dan Ashworth has a more straightforward path to signing the Brighton star.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Downie said: “We saw in the summer they were looking at Maddison. He plays a similar position to James Maddison. I just think out of the two of them, Trossard would probably be the easier one to get contractually.”
A £30m saving?
Whilst both Trossard and Maddison are undeniable talismanic figures for their respective sides, there is a big difference in price point.
The Belgian is valued at around £30million, where as Qatar-bound James Maddison sits at a sum double that, floating around the £60million mark.
With De Zerbi’s ideology of deploying Trossard as a centre-forward, their games are differing somewhat, with Maddison looking like the more well-rounded asset from a creative stand-point.
For instance, Maddison has created 31 chances for Leicester in the Premier League this season and Trossard has created 19 thus far for Brighton.
Both assets have proven themselves as astounding stars for their respective sides. Maddison seems to have a higher ceiling in terms of his potential, being two years Trossard’s junior, and would help to tick off the Premier League’s quota for having a certain amount of English players in the squad.
For that, the Magpies will need to pay a premium.
As such, Trossard, garnering a very similar haul of attacking returns this season, could well serve as a more financially astute option in a deal that will allow Ashworth to use his Brighton connections once more.
