Newcastle United are now eyeing RC Lens’ £34million central midfield star Seko Fofana.
That is according to journalist Robin Bairner, who believes the 27-year-old would be the perfect fit in the engine room for the Toon and would expect the Ligue 1 star to strike up a complimentary partnership with talisman Bruno Guimaraes.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Bairner said: “I think he’d fit really nicely with Bruno Guimaraes. Fofana’s been a sort of revelation in Ligue 1 since he moved from Udinese a couple of years ago, he’s been undoubtedly one of the best central midfielders.
“Bruno was a strong performer in Ligue 1, and Seko Fofana is kind of similar. Very strong attacking player, he does most of his best work going forwards, is known for his powerful runs, his excellent shooting, and he’s got a very good scoring record.
“His influence at Lens has been tremendous, it’s very difficult to overstate how good he’s been there.”
Bruno x Fofana
Number-8-wearing-Fofana has certainly left a positive impression on Bairner and it’s easy to see why.
Eight goals in Ligue 1 last season demonstrated his attacking exploits in a campaign that saw Les Sang et Or secure a second consecutive seventh-place finish in their second season back in France’s top flight.
This season though, Lens have burst forward and find themselves in second place, five points away from the almost flawless Paris Saint-Germain, who have not lost in the league this season.
Fofana has been a big influence once more, ranking as the side’s third most impactful player when it comes to attacking returns, having bagged two goals and two assists in Ligue 1 this season.
Whilst there is a lot more to his game, the former Manchester City man’s attack-minded approach would compliment Guimaraes, with both players able to rotate throughout the half-spaces to create another dimension of attack, resulting in greater numerical superiority for the side and making them less predictable in the process.
