Newcastle United have received a big boost in their reported pursuit of Benfica full-back Alex Grimaldo.
That is according to a report from journalist Rudy Galetti, as per The Insider.
Galetti made it clear that the Magpies would face stiff competition from Grimaldo’s signature, but is now convinced that the club have a good chance of luring the star to Tyneside, with Eddie Howe’s connections massively helping.
As per The Insider, Galetti said: “However, the Italian club is not the only one interested in Grimaldo: we had said that Inter, Napoli, Manchester City and Arsenal were following the player as well, but now – in the race for the Spaniard – also Newcastle have entered with a great determination.
“The Magpies coach really appreciates the Spaniard and the fact that Eddie Howe and Grimaldo have the same agent could be a plus for Newcastle.
“The player, as already reported, has communicated to his current club that he wants to leave Portugal to start a new experience elsewhere and certainly the charm of the Premier League could satisfy him.
A major boost
With Howe’s agent links, Newcastle have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of the star, with the Magpies boss said to be a big admirer according to Galetti.
Grimaldo is a big name in defence and will cost the side a decent wad of money, coming in at £50million according to ChronicleLive.
The 27-year-old has made a name for himself since departing Barcelona in late 2016 and has been with Benfica ever since.
Last season he demonstrated his attacking prowess by notching five goals and five assists in 29 Primeira Liga appearances.
Along with his Champions League experience, the number-3-wearing star would surely shine at St James’ Park and elevate the side in their medium-term ambition to be top 4 regulars.
The journalist believes that “in the coming weeks, we will know who will win this race” which is an admission that gives Newcastle fans something to look forward to after the World Cup.
Here’s hoping that the Spaniard is attracted to the Tyneside project.
