Newcastle United will only sign players “when they’re 100 per cent convinced” that the player is of the right fit, and the Magpies will target a certain position in the near future.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who has dropped an update regarding his expectations for the Tyneside club in the upcoming January transfer window.
What’s the word?
Taking to his exclusive Caught Offside column, the Italian states that Eddie Howe’s side will look to bolster their wide attacking options in the winter, but will stick by their strict policy when it comes to identifying targets.
Romano said: “They are sticking with the same strategy – sign players but only when they’re 100 per cent convinced the player is the right fit for now and the future,
“Nothing is guaranteed yet, but the Magpies are looking at wingers for the January window. I expect them to identify some targets doing the World Cup.“
January action needed
Given their spectacular start to the season which sees them occupy fourth place in the Premier League, Newcastle will be looking to use this campaign as a gateway for things to come and should quite rightly consider employing the old adage of improving the squad whilst on top.
Howe is not yet blessed with the same tier of quality depth as other clubs pushing for Champions League football and is arguably missing another marquee midfielder and winger.
In the midst of Romano’s latest update, it seems that Newcastle will prioritise the latter in January, with Allan Saint-Maximin’s injury woes all too frequent.
Despite the Frenchman’s clear impact when fit, he has shown this season that he cannot be overly relied upon, having already missed eight matches since the campaign kicked off.
Therefore, a high-calibre wide player to provide both competition and cover for the 25-year-old maverick seems like the smartest move for the Magpies to pursue in January.
