Esteemed transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has issued an update discussing the prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo’s rumoured switch to Newcastle United.
Taking to his exclusive substack column with CaughtOffside, Romano addressed rumours circulating around the Portuguese icon, amidst a worryingly low lack of minutes for Manchester United’s top scorer of last season.
In his column, Romano wrote: “There’s plenty of Cristiano Ronaldo speculation doing the rounds, and one story stated that Newcastle have decided against signing him.
“Newcastle always wanted to go down a different path with a focus on young players. No news on Ronaldo, as things stand.”
The Newcastle revolution
Since commencing the Saudi-led era at St. James’ Park, Newcastle have been moving differently and seem calculated in their approach to all aspects so far.
Despite having a large transfer kitty at their disposal, and possessing a positive FFP reputation that would allow them to bring in some huge names without repercussion, the club’s summer spend of just over £120million saw them spend well yet again, purchasing high-potential players who can build on the foundations of the squad for years to come.
The likes of Alexander Isak and Sven Botman, both aged 22, are great examples of this.
Whilst I believe a figure like Cristiano Ronaldo could leave a positive impact on the side and help them to progress further in terms of both performance and brand, you could not blame the Magpies if they were to stick to their philosophy and opt against making such a move.
Either way, as Romano states, it’s just a rumour at this point, so only time will tell whether this deal comes to fruition.
