# Keith Downie drops Newcastle January transfer window prediction

**[Sky Sports reporter](https://twitter.com/SkySports_Keith) Keith Downie believes that Newcastle United will have a ‘lengthy list’ of wingers in mind to target when it comes to the January transfer window.**

The Magpies were [unable to recruit](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/transfers/verein/762) a wide player in the summer but it looks as if they are going to try again this winter.

With Eddie Howe’s side scoring just once from open play in the [injury-enforced absence](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/allan-saint-maximin/leistungsdaten/spieler/272642) of influential forward Allan Saint-Maximin, PIF are perhaps now willing to splash out on another winger.

Following the Toon’s most recent clash against Bournemouth, Howe [admitted](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11224499/Eddie-Howe-says-Nerwcastle-missed-magic-Allan-Saint-Maximin-Bournemouth-draw.html) that such a game against a ‘stubborn opponent’ would have suited the Frenchman, so perhaps having that alternative option would have seen Newcastle walk away with all three points.

**Downie expects January winger arrival**

Considering that the Tyneside outfit are without a league win since the opening day and have [drawn five of their first seven](https://www.flashscore.co.uk/team/newcastle/p6ahwuwJ/) top-flight fixtures, Downie is expecting the club to invest in that position when the market reopens in just over three months’ time.

He told [GIVEMESPORT](https://www.givemesport.com/88064348-newcastle-howe-will-now-have-lengthy-transfer-list-at-st-james-park): “I’d be surprised if they don’t add in that position. Who? I don’t know. I would imagine they’ll have a lengthy list and will just try to do what they can. Obviously, January’s a notoriously difficult window to work in.”

**Who could Newcastle bring in?**

The north-east club were [heavily linked](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/12645855/newcastle-united-interested-in-bayer-leverkusen-winger-moussa-diaby) with a move for Moussa Diaby in the summer but his reported [£55m](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1651862/Moussa-Diaby-Arsenal-Newcastle-transfer-news-Premier-League) asking price seemingly proved a deterrent. [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-eddie-howe-green-lights-newcastle-united-signing-mykhaylo-mudryk-after-26m-bid/) have also reported that Howe has given the go-ahead for a pursuit of Ukraine’s hottest prospect Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic is another name that the Toon are thought to be interested in according to [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/08/16/exclusive-newcastle-united-interested-chelsea-quartet-including/). He was named on the bench for new manager Graham Potter’s [first game](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/3911810) in charge at home to Red Bull Salzburg a fortnight ago.

Having made just [21 starts](https://www.transfermarkt.com/christian-pulisic/leistungsdaten/spieler/315779/plus/0?saison=2021) in all competitions last season, he may look for a move elsewhere, and Newcastle could be his route out of west London, with perhaps a loan with a purchase option the most sensible approach from Dan Ashworth.

The [50-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-pulisic/nationalmannschaft/spieler/315779/verein_id/3505) USA international has struggled with his own [injury problems](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-pulisic/verletzungen/spieler/315779), so it remains to be seen who Newcastle decide to target, although it does appear that there is a need for a fresh face out wide.
