According to The Times, Newcastle United will make a fresh approach to land James Maddison when the transfer market reopens.
The Magpies made two offers to sign the attacking midfielder in the summer but their highest bid in the region of £50m fell short of Leicester City’s £60m valuation.
Maddison has scored 36 goals and provided 26 assists in 139 Premier League games for the Foxes, and The Northern Echo have claimed that he will once again be Newcastle’s transfer priority in January.
A report from The Times now seems to reinforce those claims.
Newcastle to revive Maddison interest
It states that the Tynesiders are interested in the 25-year-old playmaker as they look to ‘add creativity to their team’. The same source suggests that PIF will ‘revive’ their interest in the former Norwich City ace should Leicester lower their asking price.
Maddison will have just 18 months left on his contract at the King Power Stadium when the transfer window reopens, which could perhaps force the Foxes’ hand.
According to the report, Leicester’s player of the year from last season is believed to be open to a move as he looks to boost his prospects of getting back into Gareth Southgate’s thinking with England.
Maddison continues to impress
An eye-catching footballer with a ‘superb’ delivery according to broadcaster Arlo White, Maddison could be a terrific prospective addition to Eddie Howe’s side. He has scored 22 times and produced 13 assists since the start of last season in all competitions.
Despite Leicester being rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, the £110k-per-week gem has been directly involved in four goals, scoring three times.
Amid the east Midlanders’ struggles, former top-flight striker Noel Whelan believes that Maddison could leave his current employers, but whether he ends up on Tyneside remains to be seen.
