According to journalist Dean Jones, Elliot Anderson is in line for a start in the Premier League with Newcastle in the not-too-distant future.
The 19-year-old has made three substitute appearances in the top-flight so far this season, the longest of which came in Newcastle’s last outing as he played 20 minutes at home to Crystal Palace.
Anderson attempted five dribbles and created one big chance in an encouraging cameo (SofaScore) and could play a part at home to Bournemouth this weekend.
He enjoyed a fruitful spell on loan at Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers last term, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in just 21 matches as the Gas were promoted to League One.
Rovers’ teammate Alex Rodman has tipped the attacker for big things in the future and dubbed his time at the Memorial Ground as “phenomenal”.
With a host of clubs interested in Anderson this summer, it was thought that he would again leave on loan but now it seems he is in talks over fresh terms on Tyneside as the Toon look to tie down their one-to-watch as he enters the final two years of his contract.
Now, Jones has suggested that given Newcastle’s verdict on Anderson he could be handed the first Premier League start of his career sooner rather than later.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s really admired and every challenge that they’ve put in front of him he’s been able to overcome.
“I don’t think it’ll be long until he’s getting the odd start in the Premier League, the way that he’s going at the moment.”
In the absence of Allan Saint-Maximin, Anderson has found himself thrown in on the left-wing for Ryan Fraser, who has been holding down the Frenchman’s spot.
Newcastle are expected to again be without their flashy forward for the visit of Bournemouth but when he returns it may limit Anderson’s minutes.
However, it is worth noting that the one-cap Scotland U21 international did replace Joe Willock in the 1-1 draw with Wolves in his more natural position through the middle as an attacking midfielder, and that could be encouraging for the youngster going forward.
