Injury expert Ben Dinnery has claimed that Callum Wilson is behind in his recovery from a hamstring issue.
Wilson has been out of action since he scored in Newcastle’s thrilling 3-3 draw with the champions Manchester City back in August and has missed each of the last three Premier League fixtures.
The 30-year-old had hit the ground running with two goals in the opening three league games and admitted that he had suffered a ‘little setback’ which was ‘disappointing’ (BBC Radio 5 Live via Daily Mail).
His injury perhaps forced the Toon’s hand as they moved to bring in Alexander Isak for a club record £63m.
The Swede has settled quickly netting against Liverpool while leading the line against Crystal Place last time out and he looks set to continue in the side given Dinnery’s latest comments.
Speaking on the Premier FPL injuries YouTube channel, the injury expert said that while Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin are nearing a return the same can’t be said for Wilson.
“Unfortunately, it looks as if Callum Wilson won’t be. He’s slightly behind with his own hamstring problem. However, the arrival of Alexander Isaak eases that burden and eases the pressure on the Newcastle boss to throw him back in there so, it may be game week eight for Callum Wilson.
“If not, if there are any concerns or any niggling doubts, then he may you know use that international break and give the striker an extra couple of weeks recovery time.”
Unfortunately, for the former Bournemouth striker, persistent unavailability has plagued his career and one is left to wonder how much further the Coventry-born centre-forward could have gone.
Having missed 23 games last term through injury, the Magpies’ supporters have had to contend without Wilson before and although he isn’t set for as major a spell on the sidelines this time around, the fans will at least be comforted by the arrival of Isak as Dinnery portrayed and Howe does have options besides Chris Wood who struggled when handed the lead role last season netting just twice in 17 league appearances, 14 of which were starts.
