Dean Jones says Nicolas Pepe is open to Newcastle switch

Toby Cudworth and Graeme Bailey of 90min said days ago that Newcastle United had been offered Nicolas Pepe and Dean Jones recently revealed to Give Me Sport that the 27-year-old would be open to the move.

Pepe joined Arsenal on a five-year deal from LOSC Lille in 2019 and has gone on to make 112 appearances in all competitions, scoring 27 goals with 21 assists.

The Ivorian international had his best campaign in 2020/21 with 16 goals and five assists from 47 games, but he fell off the following season. Pepe scored just three goals with six assists from 23 games in 2021/22, so his future at the Emirates Stadium is uncertain.

Pepe has had more below-par seasons at Arsenal than good ones, so the Gunners are keen to cash in on his signature. It remains to be seen whether Newcastle go all out to sign the 27-year-old, but Jones says Pepe would hypothetically make the switch.

He said: “I think that midtable clubs are interested in him, but I don’t think he’s interested in playing at that level of the Premier League. Newcastle would interest him because they’re going to challenge for the top six.”

Pepe started just five league games last season, so he may want more playing time than Mikel Arteta can give him. Is he worth the risk for Newcastle though?
