Newcastle United spent £91.1m in January, signing Bruno Guimaraes from Olympique Lyonnais (£38m), Chris Wood from Burnley (£27m), Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion (£13.5m) and Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid (£12.6m), but the Magpies didn’t make any money through sales.
This summer, Newcastle have spent £59m on signing Sven Botman from Olympique Lyonnais (£33m), Matt Targett from Aston Villa (£16m) and Nick Pope from Burnley (£10m), but they haven’t made any money through sales.
Newcastle have lucrative resources but need to stay in line of Financial Fair Play regulations, so Paul Robinson warned that they may have to sell valuable assets to balance the books.
Allan Saint-Maximin is one player who could be moved on as he has interest from Premier League clubs and could fetch £40m. Robinson would be shocked to see him sold but understands the financial dilemma.
He told Football Insider: “I’m surprised they would consider letting him go. Newcastle have to keep an eye on financial fair play over the next couple of years. There are funds there and they are going to invest in the squad. It is all well and good spending, but you have to balance the books and toe the line.”
Newcastle have spent a total of £150m in the last two transfer windows without bringing significant money in through sales. The Magpies do have owners who can cover losses, but United need to be self-sufficient to avoid repercussions.
Howe has already said he won’t overspend on new recruits, so Newcastle are paying attention to their finances. Saint-Maximin is a valuable asset too, so he’d generate a good amount of money.
