Newcastle United are expected to sign another striker this summer as Callum Wilson has missed 32 Premier League games in two years while Joelinton hasn’t scored more than four league goals in a season since his 2019-arrival.

And although Chris Wood was signed in January to shoulder some of the scoring burden, he managed only two goals in 17 games, so the Magpies have their eye on another centre-forward.

One name on Newcastle’s radar was Alexander Isak, but they’re struggling to agree a fee with Real Sociedad. The 22-year-old has made 128 appearances in all competitions for Los Txuri-Urdin, scoring 43 goals with eight assists. Kevin Campbell says he’s worth signing as he’d improve the squad.

He told Football Insider: “Isak’s a real talent – we saw him linked with Arsenal many times in January. If they invest in Isak, he’s going to have to play. I’ve watched and covered him in Spain for a couple of seasons and he is a very good player.

“Maybe he doesn’t score enough goals – but he holds the ball up extremely well and Newcastle would be getting a fine player.” Isak scored nine goals from 37 league games in his debut season and 17 goals from 34 league games in his second campaign, but the Swedish international netted only six goals from 31 La Liga games last season.

Campbell concedes that might be a risk given Howe is desperate for a tried and tested goalscorer, but Isak is only 22. He has plenty of years ahead of him to develop, but it remains to be seen if a deal can be reached.
