Dwight Gayle is one of many players that has been at Newcastle United for too long without contributing and Eddie Howe is finally dealing with the situation. Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live says the 32-year-old has been told to train with the reserves until he finds himself a new club.
It’s a brutal move to freeze out a first-team player in this manner, but Gayle has had this coming for a long time. The 32-year-old has been surplus to requirements for two years but continues to stay at Newcastle despite having offers to leave.
Gayle has started just four Premier League games in two years and has only netted one goal since 2020, so he’s bringing very little to the Newcastle squad. Callum Wilson, Chris Wood and Joelinton are ahead of Gayle in the pecking order, so the writing is on the wall.
Newcastle are on the hunt for another centre-forward too, so that would result in the 32-year-old not even making the matchday squad. Howe has made it clear that Gayle won’t be part of his plans next season, so the striker will have to move on or sit in the reserves until his contract expires in 2024.
Ryder says Middlesbrough are interested in Gayle, so a return to the Championship could await.
