Paul Robinson says Anthony Martial won’t join Newcastle

Although Eddie Howe has Callum Wilson, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle in attack, Wilson has struggled with injuries, Wood has struggled for goals and Gayle has struggled for playing time, so Newcastle United could do with another centre-forward this summer.

One of many players on their shortlist was Anthony Martial and the 26-year-old appeared keen to make the switch in 2021, but Paul Robinson believes a deal is now dead in the water. Martial is expected to leave Manchester United this summer after falling down the pecking order, but it won’t be joining Newcastle.

Robinson told Football Insider: “That has sailed. I think he has missed his opportunity to go there. Callum Wilson is a better player than him right now. Martial went to Sevilla and it did not work for him. He did not set the world alight there.

“For Newcastle to revisit it… I just can’t see it to be honest. I don’t think that is a possibility. Martial has missed the chance to move there. I firmly believe that ship has sailed.” The French international joined Man Utd from AS Monaco in 2015 and has gone on to make 269 appearances in all competitions, scoring 79 goals with 50 assists.

Martial scored just four goals from 22 Premier League games in 2020/21 and was loaned out the following season after being deemed surplus to requirements, but his switch to Sevilla didn’t quite go to plan. The 26-year-old scored one goal and made one assist in 12 games for the Spanish outfit, so Newcastle are better off looking elsewhere.
