# Newcastle told to sign ‘fantastic’ Ivan Toney

Newcastle United aren’t short of strikers with Callum Wilson, Joelinton, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle at their disposal, but Wilson’s had [injury](https://readnewcastle.com/2021/02/17/danny-murphy-worry-callum-wilson-injury-newcastle-relegation-fight/)problems, Joelinton often [plays](https://readnewcastle.com/2022/05/07/joelinton-has-future-at-newcastle-despite-pundit-comment/)in midfield, Wood has been [short](https://readnewcastle.com/2022/05/08/chris-wood-could-be-benched-for-newcastle-v-man-city/)of goals and Gayle is [surplus](https://readnewcastle.com/2022/03/16/dwight-gayle-is-finished-at-newcastle/)to requirements, so Eddie Howe needs a new face in attack.

The Magpies have lucrative resources following their [takeover](https://www.nufc.co.uk/news/latest-news/pif-pcp-capital-partners-and-rb-sports-media-acquire-newcastle-united-football-club/) by Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, so they’re being linked with a lot of players across Europe. Brentford’s Ivan Toney is the latest name and Frank McAvennie believes he’d be a great acquisition.

He told [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/newcastle-united-told-to-pay-after-40m-ivan-toney-update-pundit/): “There will be a Newcastle tax, we know that much. But Toney is a fantastic player, a wonderful talent. I really do like Toney though, I think he would be a quality addition for Newcastle. If £40million is the price, they will have to suck it up and pay.”

The 26-year-old [joined](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/transfers/spieler/251664) Brentford on a five-year deal from Peterborough in 2020, setting them back £5m. Toney has gone on to make [89 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/251664) in all competitions, scoring 47 goals with 16 assists, so he’s proven himself a brilliant striker in the Championship and Premier League.

Newcastle were the ones who sold Toney to Peterborough for £350k in 2018, so they’d be paying £40m for a player they let go for peanuts years before. The uncapped English has come a lot way since then, however, so he could be a good player for the Magpies.
