Martin Dubravka impressed for Newcastle United after returning from injury, but his place in the side might be up for grabs next season if Eddie Howe identifies his dream transfer target between the sticks.
Chris Waugh of The Athletic says the Magpies manager would like a ball-playing goalkeeper, but Newcastle aren’t putting all their efforts into signing another shot-stopper. It’s not seen as a priority.
Nevertheless, Dubravka will go into this summer not knowing what his role at St James’ Park will be. He’s first-choice between the sticks but could be playing second fiddle if another goalkeeper is recruited.
Karl Darlow has been playing a supporting role all season and could be on his way out for more opportunities elsewhere, but the 33-year-old could be following him through the exit door.
Newcastle have been linked with Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, Everton’s Jordan Pickford, West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone and Lazio’s Thomas Strakosha among others, so they are making a minor effort to replace Dubravka.
The Slovakian international has made 130 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle (2018 – present), conceding 175 goals with 37 clean sheets. This season, he’s made 27 appearances across the board, shutting out eight clubs.
He’s been a good servant but could always be upgraded now Newcastle have lucrative funds.
