Noel Whelan tips Newcastle to sign James Tarkowski

Newcastle United have Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark on the books, but Eddie Howe is expected to bring in another centre-back this summer – Fernandez and Clark have been surplus to requirements in the second half of the season and could be sold when the transfer window opens.

Newcastle may have already identified a replacement, however, with Burnley’s James Tarkowski reportedly a target. The 29-year-old is out of contract this summer and isn’t likely to sign a new deal, so he could be available on a free transfer.

With 216 appearances under his belt since his 2016-move from Brentford, Tarkowski is very experienced at the top level. He’s also represented England on two occasions, so Noel Whelan believes he’d be a great option for Newcastle.

West Ham United were interested in Tarkowski but have resigned themselves to defeat as they’re unable to compete with Newcastle financially. Whelan warned Howe about being careful in recruitment this summer but believes the 29-year-old would be a good fit at St James’ Park.

He told Football Insider: “It’s a really exciting building process for Newcastle. Eddie Howe has done a fantastic job both on the pitch with his set-up and with the players he has brought in. They need to keep getting their recruitment spot on now.

“They’re going to be strong, and I can definitely see Tarkowski fitting into that. He’s a top Premier League centre-back, experienced, international player – and he’s available on a free transfer.”

Tarkowski has made 32 league appearances this season, scoring one goal with two assists. Burnley are currently 18th in the table and one point adrift of safety with two games remaining.
