# Newcastle could miss out on £9m for Gayle

Dwight Gayle has been [on the periphery](https://readnewcastle.com/2022/03/16/dwight-gayle-is-finished-at-newcastle/) at Newcastle for some time, but he’s remained at St James’ Park to fight for his place. The 32-year-old has made just [eight appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dwight-gayle/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/196522) in all competitions this season, however, so the writing is on the wall.

*Luke Edwards* of the [Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/05/11/newcastle-united-end-pursuit-jesse-lingard-move-abroad-beckons/) says Newcastle will listen to offers for Gayle this summer, but the Magpies won’t make back the money spent in 2017. Newcastle [paid](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dwight-gayle/transfers/spieler/196522) £10.8m for Gayle and had the opportunity to cash in for [£15m](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/soccer-transfers/story/3192047/fulham-bid-15m-for-newcastle-striker-dwight-gayle-report) the following season, but they rejected Fulham’s offer.

The 32-year-old has a [market value](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dwight-gayle/marktwertverlauf/spieler/196522) of £1.8m now, so Newcastle will take a £13.2m hit if he’s sold. Gayle earns £2.1m-a-year/£40k-per-week in [wages](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/newcastle-united-fc/dwight-gayle-22936/) until 2024, so his sale this summer would save the Magpies £4.2m.

Gayle has made [121 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dwight-gayle/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/196522) in all competitions, scoring 34 goals with 11 assists. He was a regular in his debut season, scoring 23 goals in 32 Championship games as Newcastle earned promotion back to the Premier League, but a poor second campaign (six goals from 35 PL games in 2017/18) led to him falling out of favour.

He was loaned out to West Brom the following season and hasn’t been a regular since returning to his parent club, so it’s time to let Gayle go. The 32-year-old is behind Joelinton, Callum Wilson and Chris Wood in the pecking order, so he won’t get many opportunities under Eddie Howe next season.
