# Howe could drop Wilson next season due to injuries

Callum Wilson has only played in 40% of Newcastle’s Premier League games this campaign but is still the Magpies’ top scorer with six goals. The 30-year-old’s his future at St James’ Park is uncertain, however, as Eddie Howe can’t trust him to stay fit over an entire season.

Wilson, who was out for [12 league games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/callum-wilson/leistungsdaten/spieler/123682/plus/0?saison=2020) last season, missed [four league games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/callum-wilson/leistungsdaten/spieler/123682) in September and early-October 2021 with a hamstring injury and missed 16 league games between January and April 2022 due to a [calf problem](https://readnewcastle.com/2022/02/07/media-react-to-callum-wilsons-dreadful-injury-blow/), so he’s only played in 57% of matches since joining Newcastle.

Danny Mills has [stated](https://readnewcastle.com/2022/03/26/danny-mills-says-newcastle-could-upgrade-callum-wilson-due-to-fitness-issues/) in the past that Wilson might need to be upgraded if he can’t avoid injuries and [reports](https://www.givemesport.com/88003075-newcastle-eddie-howe-prioritising-new-striker-at-st-james-park) suggest Howe does want another centre-forward this summer.

Newcastle have Wilson, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle at their disposal – two players who have been short of goals and one who is short of fitness – so they could do with a reliable and prolific striker.

Wilson is unlikely to be sold as he’s a useful player, but he may not be a regular starter if an upgrade is brought in.
