Jonjo Shelvey has an uncertain future at Newcastle United as the club have lucrative resources to strengthen all areas of the squad, so they’re eventually likely to find an upgrade for him.
The 30-year-old has been a regular at St James Park since his arrival from Swansea City in 2016 (197 appearances) and has continued to command a starting place this season (25 appearances), but Dean Jones doesn’t believe that will last.
He predicts Newcastle will end up replacing Shelvey because they have the money and ambition to bolster every area of the squad. Jones told GiveMeSport: “However good Shelvey (has) been for Newcastle, (he’s) not going to be a big part of that future. Those players will fall to the wayside where they will eventually be replaced by better players.”
Shelvey has skippered the side since February and has only missed four Premier League games since November, so he should have a future beyond the summer. Newcastle won’t do immediate wholesale changes to the squad either. They’ll focus on the areas that need the most work.
Shelvey is out of contract in 2023, and whether the 30-year-old is still a Newcastle player beyond the end of next season is unknown, but it would be surprising if Eddie Howe axed an able first-team regular so soon. Shelvey has been in good form, so he’s definitely a player worth keeping.
