Noel Whelan doesn’t believe Newcastle will sign Bowen

Newcastle United are expected to strengthen the squad when the summer transfer window opens as they know boast lucrative funds following their takeover by Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media.

One player the Magpies have on their radar is Jarrod Bowen, but West Ham United have no intention of letting him go due to his value to the club. The 25-year-old has scored 14 goals with 11 assists in 42 games this season and has three years remaining on his contract, so why would they let him go?

It’s easy to see why Newcastle would want Bowen, especially with Allan Saint-Maximin being linked with a move away, but Noel Whelan doesn’t believe the Magpies stand a chance of bringing him to St James’ Park this summer.

He told Football Insider: “At the minute, I think he’s in exactly the right place – the right club, with the right manager. That has been clear. The way David Moyes has transformed him from a Championship player into a top Premier League player has been incredible.

“There’s no doubt for me that he’ll be getting that England call-up soon because he’s been a revelation for West Ham. For him to be prised away from West Ham, it’s going to take a hell of a lot of money, and a hell of a lot of convincing for the player.

“As much as Newcastle are looking to build a squad which is going to take them up the table – they’ve got no European football, and they don’t have the squad to get European football. West Ham is a healthier place to be for Jarrod Bowen.”

Whelan is probably right. Bowen has been in fantastic form this season and plays for a club sitting sixth in the Premier League table after 32 games. West Ham look on course for Europa League football in 2022/23, so Bowen surely won’t want to leave just yet.
