Newcastle United are one of the richest clubs in Europe following their takeover by Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media and spent heavily in January to improve the squad.
The Magpies hadn’t had a net spent of over £35m since 2015/16, but they brought in Bruno Guimaraes (£37.9m from Olympique Lyonnais), Chris Wood (£27m from Burnley), Kieran Trippier (£13.5m from Atletico Madrid), Dan Burn (£13.5m from Brighton & Hove Albion) for £118.4m in January without making any sales, so this is a new era at St James’ Park.
Chelsea are one club who could be offloading a lot of deadwood this summer as they’ve lost sponsorships and been banned from selling tickets due to Roman Abramovich’s alleged links with Vladimir Putin. Newcastle have been linked with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Ross Barkley and Timo Werner, and Paddy Kenny is ‘certain’ they will make a signing from the Blues that ‘would be massive’.
He told Football Insider: “Listen, they have the money to do it. They can offer more money than anyone else. There is also the whole project at Newcastle, that looks like the place to be at the moment. That’s the place they are shopping now, that top table. I don’t see why Newcastle wouldn’t be in the conversation.
“Obviously, Chelsea have some of the best players in the world. It would be massive for Newcastle to get one of them in. Newcastle would take pretty much all of them, I’m sure. We have to see what happens with this. It’s still developing and we have no idea what’s going to happen.
“But if players end up leaving Chelsea, Newcastle will be putting calls in, I’m certain of that.” Newcastle will look to upgrade any weak areas of the squad and may favour players with Premier League experience, so there’s every reason to believe they could poach from Chelsea.
