Dan Ashworth resigned as Brighton & Hove Albion’s technical director in early February after holding talks with Newcastle United over their vacant post, but he’s yet to be formally confirmed by the Magpies.
Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that Ashworth will be appointed Newcastle technical director, adding that the 50-year-old is already thinking of transfer targets for the summer.
Kevin Campbell isn’t surprised Ashworth is already hard at work and believes his appointment will end up being Newcastle’s ‘most important signing’. He told Football Insider: “He is a really good man who knows his stuff when it comes to recruitment.
“Listen, this could be Newcastle’s most important signings. He can help them achieve their ambitions moving forward. For the large-scale investment they want to make they need to get people in who can get a grip and do the job. Ashworth is going to be that guy. He’s going to have a really important role.
“They were focused on getting him and they’ve got their man. He will help take the club forward.” Ashworth has a wealth of experience after working with Peterborough United, Cambridge United, West Bromwich Albion, the FA and Brighton, so Newcastle have done their homework.
The Magpies have lucrative funds following their takeover by Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, but they want to devise a plan on how to spend it. Newcastle clearly don’t want to pay over the odds for below-par talent in the coming years, so Ashworth’s expertise will be key to them getting value in the market.
