Frank McAvennie gives verdict on Newcastle’s survival hopes after Trippier injury

Things have really turned around for Newcastle United since their takeover by Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media. The Magpies invested heavily in the January transfer window, have been in fine form in recent weeks and are finally out of the relegation zone.

Kieran Trippier has looked a revelation since his move from Atletico Madrid, but Newcastle may be without him for a number of weeks after he fractured a bone in his foot. The 31-year-old has made an instant impact at St James’ Park, scoring two goals in his first four Premier League appearances, so his absence will be felt.

Frank McAvennie says Trippier’s injury is a “huge blow” to Newcastle, telling Football Insider: “I think Newcastle will be ok without Trippier. Look, it’s a huge blow for them. We all know how good he’s been since he came in.

The England international had played every minute of every game since his arrival until he was substituted in the 48th minute of United’s 1-0 over Aston Villa. Eddie Howe has Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo who can replace Trippier, but their pair aren’t on his level.

McAvennie believes Newcastle will stay in the Premier League with or without Trippier, however, as the North-East outfit have invested well in the transfer market. He added: “They signed four other players in January, (which) shows Newcastle are strong in other areas. I don’t think it will be pretty but I’m sure Newcastle have enough to stay up even it’s a season-ending injury.”
