Mark Lawrenson makes Newcastle prediction v Everton

Newcastle United welcome Everton to St James’ Park on Tuesday evening and could climb out of the relegation zone with a win.

The Magpies strengthened heavily in the January transfer window, thanks to their takeover by Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, so they’ll be a more formidable side to come up against.

Newcastle signed Chris Wood from Burnley, Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion, Matt Targett from Aston Villa and Bruno Guimarães from Olympique Lyonnais, so they’ll fancy their chances against an out-of-form Everton side.

United are in better form, boasting one win and two draws to the Toffees’ four defeats from five, but Mark Lawrenson doesn’t believe they’ll deliver. He said in his BBC Sport predictions: “Newcastle have got some new faces, of course, and it will be interesting to see how they line up in their first game for more than a fortnight.

“Overall they did pretty good business in the transfer window, but it might take a bit of time for this Newcastle team to bed in. They need the three points more than Everton do, but I don’t think they will get them. For me, it is still three from the bottom four who are going down – but I don’t see any of them finishing above Everton.”

Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League with 15 points from 21 games, one point adrift of safety. They’ve manged only two wins all season and have conceded more than two goals per game on average, so their weaknesses are obvious.

But with three defenders brought in last month, coupled with Newcastle conceding only two goals in their previous three league outings, they could keep Everton quiet at home.
