# Fans on social media would be ‘surprised’ if Newcastle beat Arsenal to Guimaraes

Newcastle United aren’t short of midfielders [with](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/ausfallzeiten/verein/762) Isaac Hayden, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, Jonjo Shelvey and Jeff Hendrick, but Hayden is sidelined with injury while Hendrick is surplus to requirements, so Eddie Howe might need new addition to the engine room.

The Magpies are 20th in the [Premier League](https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/8618/Stages/19793/TeamStatistics/England-Premier-League-2021-2022) for possession (37.8% per game on average) and 16th in the Premier League for pass completion (74.4%), so a midfielder who’s composed and can turn over the ball would be useful.

*L’Équipe* and *RMC Sport* (h/t [Get Football News France](https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2022/newcastle-submit-bid-for-lyon-midfielder-bruno-guimaraes/)) say Newcastle have made an offer for Bruno Guimarães, but Arsenal could throw a spanner in the works. The 24-year-old is expected to make a decision on which club to join, but fans on [social media](https://twitter.com/NUFC360/status/1486274857750999040) don’t believe he’ll make the switch to St James’ Park.

> If Arsenal offer the same money to club and player he’s going there. I feel we’re just being used to get Arsenal to put the offer in

> I’d be amazed if he joins us given Arsenal & Juve want him and other clubs credited with an interest include PSG & Man Utd. We may be the richest club in the world but right at this moment we don’t have the pull.

Guimarães [joined](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bruno-guimaraes/transfers/spieler/520624) Olympique Lyonnais on a four-year deal from Club Athletico Paranaense in 2020 and has gone on to make [71 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bruno-guimaraes/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/520624) in all competitions, scoring three goals with eight assists. [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-guimaraes-set-for-newcastle-medical-today-after-33-5m-bid-accepted/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1643195049) say Newcastle have won the race to sign the Brazilian, but it remains to be seen he would explicitly choose Newcastle over Arsenal.

Supporters aren’t unconvinced just yet either.
