# Fans on social media say it’s ‘hardly a surprise’ as Newcastle suffer Robin Gosens setback

Newcastle United aren’t short of options at left-back with Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie and Jamal Lewis on the books, but Dummett has spent most of the season out injured, Ritchie is just recovering from a brief layout and Lewis has hardly featured this campaign, so Eddie Howe might need a new face.

One player on Newcastle’s radar was Robin Gosens – the Atalanta fullback who was a [transfer target for Manchester City](https://manchestercity.vitalfootball.co.uk/report-man-city-probe-the-ground-for-25-7m-replacement-for-suspended-player/) – but their pursuit has taken a big blow as [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/newcastle-gosens-inter-offer-atalanta-winger/blta3d80731d711ea08) say he’s in favour of joining Inter Milan. Fans on [social media](https://twitter.com/NUFC360/status/1486264199059849222) aren’t too disappointed though.

> im fine with this..hes injured and miles away from being match fit, he doesnt know the prem and wilk take months to aclimatise….no help this season anf theres better to be had in the summer.

> Easy to see how a player would prefer to live in Milan and not face a relegation battle

Gosens [joined](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/robin-gosens/transfers/spieler/273132) Atalanta from Heracles Almelo in 2017 and has gone on to make [157 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/robin-gosens/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/273132) in all competitions, scoring 29 goals with 21 assists. The 27-year-old has been a regular at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia and is highly-rated, but Newcastle will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.

Howe has just days left in the transfer window to strengthen the backline, so time will tell if he’ll get a left-back in.
