Fans on social media say it’s ‘hardly a surprise’ as Newcastle suffer Robin Gosens setback

Newcastle United aren’t short of options at left-back with Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie and Jamal Lewis on the books, but Dummett has spent most of the season out injured, Ritchie is just recovering from a brief layout and Lewis has hardly featured this campaign, so Eddie Howe might need a new face.

One player on Newcastle’s radar was Robin Gosens – the Atalanta fullback who was a transfer target for Manchester City – but their pursuit has taken a big blow as Goal say he’s in favour of joining Inter Milan. Fans on social media aren’t too disappointed though.

Gosens joined Atalanta from Heracles Almelo in 2017 and has gone on to make 157 appearances in all competitions, scoring 29 goals with 21 assists. The 27-year-old has been a regular at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia and is highly-rated, but Newcastle will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.

Howe has just days left in the transfer window to strengthen the backline, so time will tell if he’ll get a left-back in.
