A lot of Newcastle players silenced their critics after impressing in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Leeds United. Martin Dubravka and Fabian Schar confound their nay-sayers with solid defensive performances at Elland Road, but they weren’t the only ones.
Jonjo Shelvey also shone on Saturday afternoon – no teammate made more interceptions and had more shots on target while only one player attempted more passes. The 29-year-old was given a player rating of 8/10 by Chronicle Live for his efforts and fans on social media lauded his efforts.
Against Leeds, Shelvey played for 90 minutes, had 38 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 75% of his 28 passes, had two shots on target with one goal, made two tackles, had one clearance, blocked one shot, gave away one foul, made three interceptions and had one successful dribble.
The England international has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals. Shelvey missed the start of the campaign due to injury but has been a regular since mid-October. And while the Newcastle midfielder has been inconsistent, he vindicated Eddie Howe’s faith with Saturday’s performance.
